Albert "Gene" Skaggs Obituary

Albert Eugene "Gene" Skaggs took his final lap on March 8, 2025, surrounded by the love of the family he built and the memories that were unforgettable.

Gene was a man who lived with purpose—whether that was behind the wheel of a stock car, bus, go-kart or under the hood of someone’s beloved ride, or holding the hand of the woman who meant everything to him. His wife, Suzanne ("Sue"), was his greatest love, his best friend, and his favorite navigator in life. They spent 39 years together, side by side, building a home filled with laughter, love, and just the right amount of mischief. Whether they were traveling, sharing stories, or simply sitting together in comfortable silence, their bond was the kind that time could never wear down.

Gene’s love for his family was steady and strong. He was a father first, always making sure his children—Parnelli (Atsuko), Jim (Mailyn), Mario (Patty), and Mindy (Enrique)—knew they were deeply loved and fiercely supported. He took pride in who they became, never hesitating to offer advice, encouragement, or a well-timed joke to lighten the mood. As a grandfather to Andrew, Alex (Brianna), Shelby (Jordan), and Bailey, he found new joy in watching them grow, always eager to share stories, lend a guiding hand, or introduce them to the thrill of an open road. His great grandchildren, Oakly, Eli, Bella and Berkley enjoyed rides on the 3 wheeler and running through the trees.

He spent his career doing what he did best—fixing things. As the trusted owner of his own auto repair shop, Gene wasn’t just a mechanic; he was the guy people counted on. His customers weren’t just customers; they were friends. Many refused to let anyone else touch their cars because they knew Gene would treat their vehicles like his own—meticulous, honest, and always with a touch of perfectionism. Gene’s shop wasn’t just a place to get your car fixed—it was a gathering spot. Friends, customers, and just about anyone who needed advice (or a good story) knew they could stop by with a Pepsi and a pack of Reese’s Cups and walk away with more than just free car advice. Whether it was troubleshooting an engine noise, debating the best way to squeeze a little more horsepower out of an old beater, or just catching up on life, Gene was always happy to share his wisdom—especially if there was a cold drink and chocolate involved.

Faith was an important part of Gene’s life, and in his early years, he made the most important decision of all—giving his life to the Lord. In true Gene fashion, his path to salvation was anything but ordinary. It was through the guidance of a professional wrestler-turned-pastor that he found a deeper understanding of faith, redemption, and the power of God’s grace. Just as he fine-tuned engines, Gene came to see how God had been fine-tuning his own heart all along. He embraced his faith with sincerity, finding peace in knowing that life’s greatest race wasn’t about speed, but about where you crossed the finish line.

A celebration of Gene’s life will be held at Pickerington Baptist Temple, 521 N Center Street Pickerington Ohio, on Friday the 14th, at 4:00 p.m - 6:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you take a road trip with someone you love, share a good story, or simply appreciate the beauty of a life well lived.

Rest easy, Gene. You were deeply loved, and you always will be.
