Bernard "Bernie" Hickman Obituary

Bernard “Bernie” Dean Hickman, age 90, of Columbus, Ohio, passed away peacefully on May 1, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family. Born on December 28, 1934, in Belpre, Ohio, Bernie lived a full and meaningful life marked by faith, patriotism, and devotion to those he loved.

On July 4, 1987, Bernie married Janyce, the love of his life, and together they shared 37 years of marriage rooted in faith and companionship. He was a proud father and stepfather to Bernie Hickman, Brett Hickman, Diane (Scott) Oesterle, Jeff (Rolanda) Nuzum, and Mark (Samantha) Nuzum. He found great joy in being “Grandpa Bernie” to his seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Sampson and Ethel (Hendershot) Hickman; seven siblings; and his daughter-in-law, Pamela Hickman.

Though he built a full and joyful life in Columbus, Bernie never forgot his roots in Belpre. He held a deep affection for the place where he was born and raised, staying connected through high school reunions and visits with beloved nieces and nephews. Belpre remained close to his heart throughout his life.

Bernie proudly served in the United States Air Force from 1956 to 1960. His passion for aviation continued throughout his career, first as a weather observer in Wilmington, Ohio, and later as an air traffic controller in Columbus, where he worked until his retirement in September 1987. Never one to sit still, Bernie then became a professional limousine driver, enjoying years of connection with people until he retired once again in 2009.

Bernie lived with a deep love for his country and a heart full of generosity. He was known for his love of teaching others to fly, his hands-on creativity when it came to building and labeling things around the house, and the thoughtful way he approached life. He even wrote his own song, just one example of the quiet passion and care he put into the world around him. A loyal Ohio State Buckeyes fan—especially when it came to football—Bernie could always be counted on to cheer loud and proud for his team.

Bernie was known for his playful spirit and his unforgettable Elvis impersonations — complete with the cape, the moves, and a voice that brought smiles to everyone around him. His signature song, “I Can’t Help Falling in Love with You,” was a favorite at family gatherings and special occasions. He loved performing so much, we affectionately called him “Belvis.” It was just one of the many ways he brought joy and laughter into our lives.

In his final days, he found joy in the simplest pleasures, often requesting homemade apple pie made by his daughter-in-law Rolanda, a sweet comfort that brought him so much joy.

Psalm 23 was Bernie’s favorite scripture, a reflection of his steadfast faith. He lived in the quiet assurance that “goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life,” and now he dwells in the house of the Lord forever.
