Dale Brown, of Newark, Ohio, passed away peacefully on Friday, April 11, at age 89. Dale was born in Doland, SD on November 26, 1935. He grew up on a farm with his parents and 5 brothers and sisters and attended a one room school house, known as a “country school”, through the 8th grade. His early years were full of adventures with his siblings and friends on the prairie. Many stories of those days were passed down, such as the time when a very young Dale drank some paint that looked appetizing and chased it down with real beverages that the doctor said may have saved his life.
After graduating from high school, Dale joined the Air Force as an aircraft mechanic. He was stationed in Morocco for a time and was later at Homestead Air Force base in Florida. It was during his time in Florida that he met Lynda Fleigh, a pretty young lady who attended his church. She captured his heart and when Dale’s time in the military was complete, he followed her north to Tipp City, Ohio, where Lynda had moved with her Mother. Their romance blossomed and shortly thereafter, Dale married the girl of his dreams at the United Methodist church in town.
Dale was always known for his kind heart and his eagerness to help out a friend or neighbor that needed assistance. Much to the annoyance of his kids, Dale would often stop the car on a family drive to help a motorist needing help at the side of the road. He was a devoted husband to Lynda and a loving father to his two boys, Greg and Ken. They spent many nights around the dinner table as a family with conversations filled with laughter and stories of the day.
Dale was an active member of Ginghamsburgh United Methodist Church and was even a part of a mission trip with the youth group to build housing for an orphanage in Tijuana, Mexico. He was the mechanic for the church bus that took the group to Mexico and back. In later years, Dale and Lynda attended Vandalia Baptist Church in Vandalia, Ohio, where they enjoyed fellowship with many friends and fellow church members.
Dale was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Leontine Brown of Redfield, SD, the love of his life Lynda, Sisters Sally Hanson (Brown) and Lavonne Crook (Brown), and brothers Russ and Delvin Brown. He will be greatly missed by his sons Greg (Seche) Brown, Kenneth (Anna Marie) Brown, grandchildren Jeremy, Lance, Alexa, Nathanael, and Emma, his sister Noni Frericks (Brown), and many more extended family and friends.
His family will receive friends on Wednesday, April 23 rd , from 10:30am- 12:30pm at Cotner Funeral Home, 7369 East Main St, Reynoldsburg, Ohio, where his funeral service will begin at 12:30 pm. A graveside service will follow at Green Lawn Cemetery in Columbus.
