Obituary

Gary Wesley Blackman, 76 years old, of Canal Winchester, Ohio, passed away Monday, October 26, 2020, at his home with his beautiful wife Ann by his side. Gary was born on July 25, 1944, to Joseph Raymond and Antoinnette Ann Blackman in Columbus, Ohio. He graduated from Reynoldsburg High School in 1962, where he played football for the only undefeated team in the history of Reynoldsburg High School. He then served in the US Army during the Vietnam war from 1965-1967. Gary spent the majority of his professional career in the automobile sales industry and as a maintenance supervisor for nursing home facilities before retiring in 2015.

Gary was a product of his generation, and by that, we only mean he was capable, if not sometimes proud, of being politically incorrect- yet any one of the approximately 26,457 people that spent time with him in the garage on a Tuesday or Friday night between 1996-2019 would agree that he not only welcomed but enveloped anyone from anywhere of any age of any belief system or political party at anytime. Together they would solve the worlds problems over Miller Lite and a game of Euchre. Unlike the majority of people today who pay for every little problem to be solved for them, he was able to repair anything using only the instruments already found in his precious garage- usually involving zip ties, drywall screws, and duct tape of assorted colors. And 99% of the time it was damn near perfect. He learned things the hard way sometimes such as launching his boat before he put the plug in, using Coleman lantern fluid to light the fire in the living room, or, among the all time favorites, peeing into a running fan.

Vermin near and far feared Gary, including dozens of menacing groundhogs, rabid raccoons, and several deer who repeatedly kamikazied into the driver side quarter panel of his beloved Dodge Ram. He also used a Sharpie and hash marks to keep a running tally of these casualties on the wall of his kingdom, also known as his garage.

Our beloved son, husband, father, brother, grandfather, and friend, was preceded in death by his parents Ray and Ann Blackman, brother Martin Blackman, nephews Jerry Gadrim and Timmy Bushman, brothers-in-law Jim Bushman and Mike Parker, and brother from another mother Earl Gibson.

He is survived by his wife Ann  Blackman; children Dawn (Jake) Steele, Kristen (Aaron) Davis, Sean (Kim) Blackman, Kip (different Kim) Blackman, and Ryan (Melissa) Blackman, and William and Jamie; sisters Carolyn Parker and Marlane Stadler; brothers Mark (The OG Kim) Blackman, Alan (Marie) Blackman, another brother from another mother Skip (Marcy) Oliver; 16  grandchildren, and many, many, many nieces and nephews.

Gary's Family will receive friends 2-4 p.m. Thursday, October 29 at Cotner Funeral Home 7369 East Main Street Reynoldsburg where his memorial service will follow at 4 p.m.
