James Smith Obituary

James Lloyd Smith “Smitty”, age 83, of Pataskala passed away at home surrounded by his loving family on Friday, September 17, 2021. Jim was a 1955 graduate of Reynoldsburg High School, an Eagle Scout as well as a Troop Leader, served in the U.S. Navy from 1956-1962 on the U.S.S. Antietam (CVS-36), employed with Big Bear Stores for 40 years as a maintenance supervisor. He is preceded in death by his parents Robert and Frances Smith and daughter Stephane (Capers) Cundiff. James is survived by his wife of 47 years Ethyl; children Tina (Tim) Armstrong; Janet (Stephen) Viscarra, Lawton, OK, James L. Smith, Jr. (Regina) Shertz, TX, Tina (Mike) Capers, Darcy Capers, J. Christopher Smith; brother Col. Thomas (Beverly) Smith (Ret.); sister Roberta Baxter; 15 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and nephews and nieces. Jim had great mechanical abilities always there to fix the problem. He always had his camera capturing pictures of family and friends. He enjoyed traveling, camping, hunting, fishing, gardening, playing the slots, and watching the Buckeyes and the Reds. His family will receive friends Wednesday from 12-1 p.m. at the Cotner Funeral Home, 7369 E. Main Street, Reynoldsburg, where his service, with military honors, will follow at 1:00 p.m., officiated by longtime family friend Pastor Roger Dempsey.
