Karen Hart Obituary

Karen Kay Hart, born October 22, 1947, age 78, of Columbus, Ohio, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 1, 2026, and was welcomed into heaven by her Lord and Savior.

Born and raised in Columbus, Karen was preceded in death by her parents, James Milton Hart and Marion Kathleen Hart. She is survived by her beloved daughter, Kimberly Roberts (John Mathew); her cherished grandchildren, Alexandria Carney (Austin) and Thomas Roberts (Lindsey); and her adored great-grandchildren, Adam and Avery Carney and Isabelle Roberts, who were a constant source of joy and pride in her life.

Karen’s life was defined by devotion—to her family, her work, her faith, and the relationships she cherished.  A proud graduate of South High School, she began what would become a truly extraordinary career in 1966 when she was hired as a receptionist at Columbus Jack Corporation, a supplier of ground support equipment for aircraft serving the U.S. Department of Defense, airframe manufacturers, and commercial airlines.

What began as an entry-level position quickly became a lifelong calling. Karen’s intelligence, drive, and uncompromising commitment to excellence were soon recognized by the company’s founder and late owner, Myer Mellman, who mentored her throughout her career. Through hard work and determination, Karen earned numerous opportunities to advance within the organization, breaking barriers and setting an example long before the word “trailblazer” was commonly used.

Following Mr. Mellman’s retirement in 1992, Karen continued her ascent at Columbus Jack, ultimately serving as President and Chief Operating Officer. Under her leadership, she became a steady and respected force within the company and the industry. When the company was sold to Tronair in 2017, Karen’s work ethic and dedication did not waver. Around 2018, she joined several of her former Columbus Jack colleagues at Manifold & Phalor, Inc., where she worked for a couple of years before eventually retiring for good in 2022 - closing out a remarkable career defined by loyalty, leadership, and impact.

Much like Myer mentored her early in her career, Karen took great pride in mentoring those who followed her. She believed in developing people, encouraging growth, and ensuring others had the same opportunities to advance within the organization. Her leadership was not only measured in titles held, but in the careers she helped shape and the confidence she instilled in others.

Outside of work and family, Karen embraced life with joy and personality. She had a deep and abiding love for her dogs—Polo, Dutch, and Sherlock—who were her constant companions and brought her immeasurable comfort and happiness. She also loved singing karaoke, a passion that perfectly reflected her spirit. You could often hear Karen proudly performing “Crazy” by Patsy Cline, “Do That to Me One More Time” by Captain & Tennille, or “My Way” by Frank Sinatra—songs that mirrored her confidence, heart, and independent spirit.

Karen was a wonderful cook who expressed her love through food and hospitality. She loved entertaining and had a special gift for making everyone feel welcome and at home in her house. Her table was always thoughtfully set—cloth napkins were a must—and every detail reflected her pride in creating a warm and inviting space. Among her many cherished recipes, her brown sugar cake stood out as a favorite—one that will forever be remembered, requested, and lovingly missed.

Karen, also, had an appreciation for beauty and tradition, taking great pride in her Waterford Crystal, which she treasured and cared for with the same attention and reverence she gave to the people and things she loved. And when the day was done, Karen enjoyed nothing more than a nice glass of Pinot Grigio—with ice cubes, of course—perfectly capturing her confidence in knowing exactly what she liked.

Karen was also defined by the deep and enduring friendships she cultivated throughout her life. Among the most treasured was her lifelong bond with Patty Sweeney, Dottie Denman, and Betty Blagg. Through travel, cruises, celebrations, and life’s hardest moments, the four shared an unbreakable connection, affectionately known as the original “Golden Girls.” Ever feisty and full of spirit, their friendship reflected Karen’s loyalty, humor, and strength—qualities that remain a lasting part of the legacy she leaves behind. She was also blessed with a special friendship with Marybeth Cartmille, whose companionship and support held a meaningful place in Karen’s life.

Karen’s faith in the Lord was a guiding presence throughout her life and brought her peace, strength, and hope. Her family takes comfort in knowing she is now in heaven, reunited with loved ones, and resting in eternal peace.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the incredible teams at Westerwood and Luminary Hospice. The staff at both organizations showed extraordinary kindness, compassion, and respect in caring for Karen, providing comfort and dignity during her final days. Their support will always be deeply appreciated.

Despite her professional accomplishments, Karen’s greatest pride was her family. She was a loving mother, a devoted grandmother, and a doting great-grandmother. Her strength, perseverance, and integrity left an indelible mark not only on those she worked with, but on the generations that follow her.

Karen will be remembered for her strength, her unwavering loyalty, her sharp mind, her love of her dogs, her joy for music, her generosity and hospitality, her appreciation for beauty and tradition, her steadfast faith, and her deep commitment to family, friendship, and work. Her legacy lives on through the people she loved, the careers she shaped, the homes and hearts she filled, and the many lives she mentored along the way.
