We are broken hearted to announce the sudden loss of our most cherished son, brother, uncle, and friend, Paul Samuel Oberst, on July 13th, 2021.
In his short 28years, Paul altered the world by his booming presence, his fearless enthusiasm for adventure, his self-proclaimed, “philosophically altruistic” spirit, and a boundless, unconditional love for everyone who had the blessing of knowing him.
Paul was a stranger to no man. He was deeply devoted to his family and friends, and made new acquaintances wherever he went, which helped him thrive in life as well as in real estate. Paul graduated from Pickerington High School North in 2011 and attended classes at Columbus State University working towards a degree in English Literature. He was also proud of his accomplishments as Vice President in the family-owned business, Management and Maintenance Unlimited.
Paul was a loving son to his mother, Rose Oberst, and her husband, Gevork Arutyunyan, as well as his father, Paul A. Oberst and stepmother, Sharon Oberst. He is beloved by his sisters, Angelique Conley (Brent), Ashley Dingler (Aaron), Amanda Owen (Jim), Michelle Untied (Jerod), Annie Oberst, and many adoring nieces and nephews. He is also proceeded in death by his lifelong best friend, John Lattimer, and we take comfort in knowing they are together once again.
Since Paul’s passing, many have written about how special Paul was and how special he made you feel.
They recall his love of literature, poetry, and music.
They admire his fearless sense of adventure and social proclivities.
They marvel at his uncanny ability to take any situation and find the good and the humor.
They remember his warm, protective, and affectionate hugs.
They reminisce about camp side fires, all night philosophical discussions, and Paul’s often inclination to break into beat-box or share a song.
Most of all, they recall the pleasure of his company, how loved he made them feel, how free they were to be themselves around him, and how much he will truly be missed.
Paul’s family would like to invite his friends and family to a special memorial and celebration of Paul’s life on Saturday, July 17th, from 5-10pm at The Summit Station Lions Club (7600 Summit Rd. SW, Pataskala, OH 43062)
His family will receive friends on Sunday, July 18, from 2-6pm at Cotner Funeral Home, 7369 East Main Street, Reynoldsburg. His funeral mass will be held on Monday, July 19, at 1pm at Church of the Resurrection, 6300 East Dublin Granville Road, New Albany, Ohio. Graveside service to follow at Franklin Hills Memory Gardens, Canal Winchester.
“In the end it was love that killed the poet,
but how beautiful were his last words,
that Death refused to take him,
so his poetry became his funeral”
– Paul S. Oberst
