Von Russell Smith

Von Russell Smith passed away on November 12, 2024, at the age of 86 in New Albany, OH. Born in Logan, OH on September 10, 1938, Von's journey through life was marked by a devoted commitment to both his family and a distinguished career.

Von proudly served in the United States Air Force and Ohio National Guard, a period during which he contributed to the security and welfare of the nation with honor. After his military service, Von embarked on a notable career in telecommunications, retiring from Lucent Technologies after many decades of dedicated service originally started with Western Electric and having seen transitions through Bell Labs and AT&T.

An alumnus of Ashville High School and Ohio University, Von's passion for learning was evident throughout his life.  Von was a man of many interests.  An avid private pilot and sailor, finding joy and peace above the clouds and on the water. His love for the outdoors was also evident in his enthusiasm for mushroom hunting and cross-country skiing. Von was a passionate member of his community, participating in marching band music club and coaching soccer, influencing many young lives.

Von is survived by his loving wife, Carolyn; sons, Ty and Ryan (Amy); grandkids, Alyssa, Parker, Anna and Sophia; and brother, David. He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Audrey Smith.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Von's memory can be made to the Alzheimer's Association of Central Ohio.

A graveside service for Von will be held at Franklin Hills Memory Gardens, 5802 Elder Rd. Canal Winchester, OH 43110 on Friday, November 22, 2024 at 2:00PM.
